With school openings near, parents and teachers say state leaders have stripped them of weapons against COVID-19

This time last year, we were just coming off the summer outbreak and on the 3rd of August 2020 there were 7,841 cases; 156 deaths. This year, cases are on the rise and yesterday August 3rd 2021 we had ~ 14,873 cases; ~ 53 deaths because of 3 main reasons: the unvaccinated, delta variant and also because all mask mandates are lifted. But it’s not a time to despair if we use the tools available to us. In 3 weeks schools will open, that means in Texas for under 12’s there will be almost 5 million kids crowded around schools and child care facilities; while those aged between 12-18 there are about 1.5 million still unvaccinated. What we did not have last year were vaccines, but we do now, so for the kids that are eligible, get vaccinated. How COVID-19 Affects Kids Long Term

I have seen reports on some media outlets that we are in a post-covid world. It's about as daft a thing to say since herd immunity was first proposed last summer. But my fear is that we are acting as if that’s the case, when many of our children still cannot get vaccinated. To this end, I'd like to reintroduce some facts. If 10% of Covid-19 cases in the US were children, thats 3.9 Million kids. The mortality rate for kids is greater than the number of people who passed away on Sept 11th 2001, so it's not to be ignored. We are now seeing 'long-Covid' issues for those children that have been tested. In the UK thats between 15-20% of kids, so here in the US potentially thats going to be at least 600,000 children. We still need to protect kids in our schools, face masks are still needed whether you like it or not indoors around children and unvaccinated adults until we get way over 80-90% of the entire population vaccinated. CDC warns virus can spread more than 6 feet under certain conditions

There are times when scientific reports for a very long time are just being ignored. The CDC sent everyone down a rabbit hole when looking at contaminated surfaces last year to now saying it was a minor threat. I wrote last year in a post on LinkedIn that the whole social distancing of 6ft came from a generic study done in the 1930's. We have long passed that study in knowledge, and yet it is only now that the CDC are saying for indoors, viral spread can go further than 6-ft. There are so many scientific papers showing that the viral spread can go as far as 30-ft or more, that we need better ventilation systems (why do you think there are 10's of billions of dollars in the Covid-19 rescue package for better ventilation). In NYC alone, by not using the tools available to them there have been over 1.5 million new cases since the end of October and over 19,000 deaths during the same period.

The variants have really taken control of the US and world as we see problems from India, Japan and still in the US. Thankfully, Moderna are close with the next booster to be able to combat the SA variant. However, as long as people are refusing to get the vaccine, we will continue to have mutations on this virus and consequently we will have a constant moving target in terms of 'getting back to normal'. If people could just for an instant forget politics, 'belief' positions, crazy nut theories (and there are so so many) and just look at scientific data. These numbers don't lie, they just are what they are. Science is not a belief, it's not based on hope or archaic concepts. It's based on understanding, numbers, book with proof based rules. You don't need to believe in a higher power to know that traveling from point A at a speed of 60 mph will get to point B 60 miles away in 1 hour. Not a belief, it just is what it is. Get vaccinated for all our sakes. Keep socially distant, especially indoors where the greatest infections can occur without proper precautions.

Covid-19 Reinfections Are Real And Serious—All The More Reason To Be Vaccinated

We are not out of the woods, and we will need eventually the capability to tweak our vaccines that can deal with the variants. Right now, the most important thing is to get vaccines out. We are used to getting flu shots every year, this is different but the same idea. It does not mean you stop using a mask, this is now part of our social DNA and we have to get used to it. We have had a terrible year of politicizing masks yet they are the best front line of our defense. When someone says they have a right to decide whether to use a mask or not, that is correct, in the EXACT same way they have the right to drink a bottle of vodka. That drunk does not have the right to then drive the car. You don't have to wear a mask, but you then forfeit the right to mingle with other people as you may be infected.

Past Covid-19 infection may provide 'months of immunity'

On the good side of things, it looks like the vaccines work for quite a while and we may get over a year of protection, however, if you have already been infected by the virus and recovered your natural immunity seems to be limited. Vaccine therapy or once you have been infected does not seem to be a one and done. We are more likely to need some form of booster every year. So, don't throw away your masks, just adapt. If it rains; wear a hat, if it's hot; bring a water bottle, if it's very sunny; apply sunscreen and if you are in a crowded place; wear a mask even after vaccination. It's not quantum physics or string theory. After all, it’s probably considered to be in bad taste to go to work with no pants, or so I have been told. It’s easy: wear a mask and protect yourself and everyone else, wash hands and look for a clean air environment in buildings.

When Ireland is in complete lockdown and the rates have gone exponential, where 50% of the cases are from the UK strain (origin) and not the SA one (strain), I fear for what is coming to the US. Masks have not been a political or Trumpian decision in Ireland and most of the rest of the world. The virus is taking no Irish prisoners, it’s war!

For my Family and Friends in Ireland, I'm Irish and terrified in seeing what is going on at home, even if I am now a 53 year old expat. We all have to be strict and the rise is seemingly according to Irish data, not because of the version from the UK, (only about 15% of cases), it’s the holidays. That’s the bomb yet to hit, wait 2 to 3 weeks for that one but it will come around Jan 10th!In one year from now, you can be back in the pub, give it a rest, go get a take out, you have a box set provided by Netflix, Disney or Hulu or whomever . . . enjoy. The all Ireland series will probably reopen this summer with limited restrictions (is there a 7 in a row?), and the Christmas pantomimes will be in full flow in 1 year. So, just wait and use your cop on, seriously it does not take a PhD to figure that bit out! And yes, if anyone want to point to Texas, it's a disaster, unnecessary and just a complete comedy of errors (but INTENTIONAL), except it's involved currently 30,000 people dying and growing. So yes, I get the message in the US we are beyond slow to act. For our friends and family at home; just don't let Ireland turn into Texas, please.
